Speed Limit Reduced

October 20th 2014

TOWN OF LA RONGE

October 20, 2014

Notice to All Northern Town of La Ronge and Area Residents and Visitors

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

La Ronge – Beginning October 31, 2014, the entirety of Hildebrand Drive in La Ronge will be reduced to 30km/h. Many community services are along this road, including the La Ronge Public Library, Daycare Centre, Skate Park, Mel Hegland Uniplex facility, and the newly renovated entrance to Churchill Community High School.

The increase in traffic along Hildebrand Drive from the opening of the new High School entrance is one of the main reasons for Council’s decision to reduce the speed along the whole length of the road. The change in speed limit is not a major change says Mayor Sierzycki, "There has always been a marked 30km/h section on Hildebrand Drive near the Daycare and with the opening of the access to Churchill High School another 30 km/h section is required for the School Zone. Council considered the nature of all services along the road as well as the issue of pedestrian traffic. In addition to the increase in vehicle traffic, there is likely to be an increase in pedestrian traffic as well. Our Bylaws state that wherever there is a school, playground or recreation area the speed limit is 30km/h. To be safe for the pedestrians and realistic for the drivers, it only made sense to make it a consistent speed."

Drivers are reminded to use caution and slow down near all playgrounds and school zones. "Speeding within Town limits is a concern that has been raised by a number of residents in many areas of Town," says Victoria MacDonald, CAO for the Town of La Ronge. "We are investing in more and different types of signage however it is the individual driver’s responsibility to drive safely and within the limits posted. Hopefully this is a good reminder that the speed limit on all municipal roads otherwise is only 40km/h. Even a 10km/h difference in speed can mean having time to react or it being too late to stop."
