LIFTED 07-17-15:MANDATORY EVACUATION FOR LA RONGE: GENERAL EVACU
July 4th 2015
JULY 20, 2015 UPDATE: The evacuation was lifted and roadblocks removed into the communities at 1:00pm on Friday July 17, 2015.
UPDATE:A mandatory evacuation has been called for the Town of La Ronge.
The general evacuation remains in place for the communities of Air Ronge and Lac La Ronge Indian Band.
Leaders from the local councils made the decision shortly after noon on Saturday July 4.
Fire activity has increased, and the Egg fire is now on the east side of Hives Lake within 8 km of the north end of La Ronge.
Residents are advised to leave with a sense of purpose and urgency, but not panic. The evacuation is advised now in order to take advantage of daylight hours. The weather forecast is not favourable for attacking the fires.
The primary evacuation route is Highway 2 south. Highways crews are monitoring junctions and will advise travelers of changes, road closures and alternate routes. One alternate is Highway 165 eastwards towards Creighton.
There is heavy smoke and some small fire activity along the route, so residents should remember to drive carefully.
Those who can drive and find their own accommodations down south should do so. People needing transportation should register at the JRMCC hall and arena on Far Reserve. Buses will be provided. People are advised to bring only one bag and necessary medication, and no pets. Officials staying behind will do their best to look after pets left behind.
