 Council Approved Development Incentives

La Ronge, SK – At its meeting on January 27th, Council adopted a fourth policy designed to incentivise development in the community.

In addition to the existing housing shortage challenge, community projects are planned for the coming years, including such things as the new Long-term Care Facility and expanded RCMP Detachment.  “These projects are anticipated to create jobs, further impact housing needs, and spark business expansion and development.  The Town is preparing to service and market lands to assist in meeting these development needs, but Council recognizes the need to provide more direct incentives to jump start development, particularly housing construction”, stated Jeff Long, Manager of Planning & Development.

Here is a summary of the incentive programs now in effect in the Town of La Ronge:

1. Downtown Revitalization: Provides a grant of up to $5,000 to assist downtown businesses with projects designed to improve the aesthetics associated with buildings and properties.

2. Economic Development Tax Abatement Policy: Provides a municipal tax abatement for new developments, and major renovation projects, to vacant and existing properties and buildings in the C1 – General Commercial, C – 2, Highway Commercial, and C3 – Shoreline Commercial Districts.

3. Housing Incentive Program Policy: Provides a cash payment to property owners who undertake construction of a new dwelling unit(s) on their property, such that there is a net increase in the number of dwelling units. A net increase of up to 3 dwelling units is eligible for $10,000 per unit and 4 dwelling units or more, $15,000 per unit.

4. Residential Development Tax Abatement Policy: Provides a municipal tax abatement to property owners who undertake residential developments that create a net increase of residential dwelling units.

“Council is dedicated to addressing development challenges facing the community in a fiscally responsible manner”, explained Mayor Joe Hordyski.  “Deferring tax revenue associated with community growth, offering grants for downtown revitalization projects, and providing cash incentives for new housing construction, are ways Council that can partner with the community and encourage needed investment.”  “Projects may qualify for more than one of our development incentive programs and we are here to assist people in order to kickstart them”, added Jeff Long.

The Province of Saskatchewan is also providing a grant of up to $35,000 for new secondary, garage and garden suites through its Saskatchewan Secondary Suite Incentive Grant program.
