Commemorative Naming The Town recognizes that the practice of commemoratively naming eligible assets is an effective way of honouring the histories, stories and legacies of the community and is committed to taking an equitable, inclusive and sustainable approach to commemorative naming. To qualify for commemorative naming, a name must meet at least one of the following conditions: - be in recognition of a Person that significantly contributed to the founding, building, or development of the Town and/or surrounding region, including the recognition of a significant non-Sponsorship Donation made to the Town;
- be in recognition of a Person who demonstrated excellence, courage, or service in ways that bring special recognition to the Town, Province of Saskatchewan, or Canada;
- be in recognition of a Person who is associated or affiliated with the Town and has been recognized for outstanding achievement associated with their profession;
- be in recognition of a Person who volunteered and gave significant help to individuals, groups, service organizations, or general humanitarian causes of the Town and/or surrounding region;
- be in recognition of a Person who gave, or significantly risked, their life to save or protect others;
- be in recognition of a Person who significantly served the community in an elected capacity, or who is associated or affiliated with the Town and served in an elected capacity at a regional, provincial, or national level;
- be a name that recognizes a cultural or historical event of importance to the Town, La Ronge region, Saskatchewan, or Canada;
- be a name that recognizes a natural feature of the Town and/or La Ronge region.
All naming requests must include: - the proposed name;
- a brief description as to why the name should be considered;
- supporting documentation to authenticate information in the description (e.g. newspaper articles, obituaries, internet links, family records, archives, etc.);
- name and contact information of the person(s) submitting the name;
- any suggested street, park, facility or area of the community where the name may be most suitable or preferred; and
- in the event the name is after a person, the contact information for the person or where the nominee is deceased and the contact information of the closest living relative.
Names may not: - be in litigation with the Town;
- negatively affect the dispatch of emergency service personnel; and
- be perceived as discriminatory, or derogatory, associated with controversial or inappropriate religious or political affiliations, bring disrepute to the Town, result in inappropriate abbreviations or acronyms, or otherwise detract from the character and integrity of the community.
